Faith, Physics and Love: A Contemporary Cosmology in the Christian Mystical Tradition
FAITH, PHYSICS AND LOVE is a cosmology which reconciles the scientific accounts of the origin of the universe with the mystical knowing, from Christian revelatory experience, of how Creation and the human person, as embodied spirit, came to be. Through an account of the historical development of language and by engaging with the scientific enquiries from Newton’s theory of gravitation to quantum theory, Br Neil McGurk, fms, reveals the limitations of a phenomenological understanding of our...

“God loves things by becoming them.”
These words from Richard Rohr’s The Universal Christ became alive for me and so real in a deeply profound way, during my recent stay at the St Lucia Retreat Centre. Whenever, I return to the Retreat Centre and St Lucia, I feel like I am stepping through that magical wardrobe and into Narnia. A new adventure each time! On this visit, unlike other times, I had no expectations or goals, spiritual or otherwise that I felt a need to aspire to. I was ready to receive and embrace whatever came my...

Encountering the Divine in nature
The geographical setting of the Catholic Retreat Centre in St Lucia facilitates a ready-made ambience for a spiritual encounter with the Divine. It is situated at the entrance of the indigenous forest of the town, surrounded by the luscious growth of the estuary, adorned with mystical and well-kept walking pathways. The area is shared by various kinds of wildlife such as hippo’s and buck that often claim their natural space which not only enable humans to view and encounter them, but for...

As the retreat began I had been very attracted by the many extensive bushes of “yesterday, today, tomorrow” which were growing both in the garden, along the sides of the road and even up into the trees; this influenced my writing when it was suggested that we might express our experience poetically! In my beginning is my end In my end is my beginning Yesterday Today Tomorrow Or an everlasting NOW? BE in the present – in the PRESENCE Seeing one who came after – yet existed before Seeing...

On September 20-29, The St Lucia Retreat Centre organised a retreat lead by Father Chris. “The Universal Christ” by Richard Rohr was the theme for the eight days. There were 15 participants including lay people and nuns from various congregations. From this retreat I learned to see God in all things including in a dog! The process was not easy. During the retreat, Father Chris brought his dog from Johannesburg. This dog followed him wherever he went. My thoughts were full of anger, concern,...

Humanity, you are all One. You are one beloved community, and you are one global sickness. You are all contagious—and always have been, unconsciously infecting and yet able to also bless one another. There are no higher and lower in this world. There is no smart or stupid; no totally right or totally wrong. The only meaningful division is between those who serve and those who allow themselves to be served. All the rest is temporary posturing. Many to whom you look for power and leadership...

In St Lucia, God is generous!
My name is Weronika and I have recently attended a retreat at St. Lucia Retreat and training Centre Usually when we go for the retreat to detach from every day life we need to choose between, ocean, lake or indigenous nature but St. Lucia has it all. The variety of landscapes, animals, bird and plants species , colors and odors is the nonpareil experience of God’s generosity that I’ve touched. In Saint Lucia God is generous! Providence and surprise is part of God’s generosity: During the...

“The Creator of the Universe is looking at you, waiting for you to pay attention.”
“The Creator of the Universe is looking at you, waiting for you to pay attention,” the Sister said. “Take a walk in the forest. Be specific about what you are praying for, what you long for, and ask for the grace of a response.” Then sit with Ephesians 1: 3 -14, savour words that resonate with you, and converse with your God. I set out on my walk with the intention to be ‘one’ with Creation and to place our children and their families before the Creator, seeking His guidance and...

An 8-day Ignatian retreat
Sr Elisabeth Marie guided me on an 8-day Ignatian retreat during the heat of Summer 2019. It was my second 8-day retreat and I was happy to be joined by my brother Nicholas. Here is what I appreciated: Firstly the setting: of the retreat centre, forest, beach, mangrove swamp, estuary lake, the beach for long meditative walks, all being quiet together in the Presence of God. Secondly, the hospitality: of a private room under fabulous mature indigenous trees, with homemade food three times a day...
